Accelerated Reader Program
Fairview Elementary
School is proud to be a part of the Accelerated Reader
program. Accelerated Reader is a motivational program that promotes and builds
reading skills.Fairview introduced Accelerated Reader
to students eight years ago.
The AR process is
a simple one. A student first selects a book from the thousands listed on the
AR test list. Then the student reads the book at her/his own pace. Finally, the
student takes a computerized test over the book. Points are awarded for correct
answers.
Students are
recognized each grading period as they reach different point levels from 5 to
200 points. Accelerated Reader has proven to be an effective motivator,
increasing student reading. Teachers require students to reference text when
answering Accelerated Reader questions.
The AR store is
run by the Fairview
classroom teachers. Various items are available and are marked with point
values to indicate the cost of the item. Students may decide to let their
points accumulate over longer periods of time so that they can buy items that
cost more points.
Fairview teachers and students
like the AR program. Teachers see evidence of improved reading skills such as
comprehension and vocabulary. Students are reading more and more each day to
accumulate points and while doing so, are becoming better readers.
